System Slow or Hanging - Basic Troubleshooting Steps | IT Help

System Slow

Purpose:
This article helps users perform basic checks when their laptop or desktop is slow, unresponsive, or hanging frequently.

Issue Symptoms:

  • System takes too long to open applications
  • Mouse or keyboard response is delayed
  • Screen gets stuck or freezes
  • Frequent application not responding message
  • System becomes slow after login

Basic Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1: Save your work

Before trying any troubleshooting, save all open files and documents.

Step 2: Restart the system

A system restart can clear temporary issues and improve performance.

Step 3: Close unused applications

Too many open applications can slow down the system.
Please close:

  • Unused browser tabs
  • Background applications
  • Large files or software not currently needed

Step 4: Check internet-based applications

If only Teams, Outlook, browser, or cloud applications are slow, the issue may be related to network speed rather than the full system.

Step 5: Check available storage

Low disk space can impact performance.
Please make sure enough free space is available on the system drive.

Step 6: Keep the laptop connected properly

If you are working on battery saver mode or low battery, performance may reduce.
Connect the charger and recheck.

Step 7: Do not force shutdown immediately

If the system is temporarily stuck, wait 2–3 minutes before taking further action.

Step 8: Raise a ticket if issue continues

If the system is still slow or hanging after restart, please raise an IT support ticket.
